I've heard more about the singularity in the last two months than in the rest of the last decade. I believe this means that the general public, or at least the popular science segment of it, is starting to jump on Ray Kurzweil's bandwagon.
For example, the latest X-Prize is for the development of a computer-brain interface. The implications of a perfected computer-brain interface are staggering. Within 90 years we will have the technology to build The Matrix, and will be able to download experiences and skills into ourselves. There will even be an app store.
Kurzweil's The Age of Spiritual Machines is required reading for anyone planning on living past 2040 or so. Get on it.
